There’s a lot of reasons we give Member of the Month to individuals in our league, but we would like to now focus on someone who hasn’t had the best of luck with skating, but someone who has shown dedication to the sport against all odds. Violentnina Rossi was on skates just a few months after finishing Fresh Meat before she was forced to temporarily hang them up due to injury. Now, having overcome a knee operation, further injuries from sledding and jeep accidents, she is just making her way back onto the track to begin her training once again.
What’s the one thing you’ll hear Maria ‘Thumpalina’ Higgins say time and time again during every training session? Engage. That. Core.
As a professional PT and Nutritionist Maria came to MRD like an oasis in the desert - much needed, desperately dreamed of and almost too good to be true. Within weeks she had us crunching on our lunch breaks, squatting before 7am and running through the dark winter nights all in the name of fitness. Maria has not only become an integral asset to the dynamics of the team but has also kindly become the league’s first major sponsor. Higgiefit Lifestyles helps support, guide and educate people on all things fitness, health and nutrition. It is through her daily bootcamps, one-to-one PT sessions and nutritional plans that the team has really grown into their own.
When Nik "Shivvers" Shivley first came to us she was unsure if this sport was really her cup of tea (she thought she was coming to a Roller Disco!) and it took a few bumps and tumbles for her to appreciate the true nature of this highly physical contact sport.
Being a fulltime teacher and mum of two children means Nik is a busy bee; but no matter how strapped for time she is, she finds a way to training and gets stuck in to drills and scrimmages 100%. Shivvers has come from strength to strength and is now a solid team player that we can't wait to see in some of our up and coming games. She has turned out to be one of the most dedicated and determined individuals to skate beside us; it is because of this that she was voted MRDs most inspirational skater of 2014, and has been chosen as February's Member of the Month!
It has been a busy year for Mansfield Roller Derby – a busy, beautiful year, full of excitement, a year full of change and a year full of growth. 2014 saw Mansfield Roller Derby take part in our very first public, competitive game, as well as a multitude of casual, closed-door games (known as scrimmages) that sent us travelling across the country. The year has also brought us many new things, new skaters, new branding, new ideas and opportunities. It has also brought us some new babies as a few of our skaters got the nine month injury!
So, you've probably heard the rumours, or noticed the many hints that have been dropping since November, but Mansfield Roller Derby would like to proudly announce that the team will be taking part in the British Roller Derby Championships 2015.
You won’t see him on skates, you may not even see him in photographs, he holds no titles nor takes any derby wives. He is the watcher on the track side, the shield that guards the realms of skaters. He is the Medicator and he is our Member of the Month.
So far our members of the month have mainly been travel team skaters within our league. We thought that it was about time that our hard working NSOs, Referees and Volunteers had some recognition!
This month's member of the month is Dorny Darko, bench coach, referee, coach and Independent Skater. Dorny has been a member of MRD since late 2012 and has made a huge impact on the entire league, volunteering countless hours to help run coaching sessions and bench the Travel team. We had a chat with Dorny to find out more about him...
