Since then, Stormy has taken some time out to rehab a knee injury (unrelated to Derby), but that hasn't dampened her team spirit. Refusing to miss a training session, Stormy has focused her time between selling team merchandise, acting as NSO and heading up Mansfield Roller Derby's Community Outreach project, working alongside local Food Banks.
Which position do you play? I guess any, but mainly blocker and preferably position two or the inside line of the track. Although I do like to jam sometimes.
When did you join Mansfield Roller Derby? I joined Mansfield Roller Derby in September 2013 after seeing it mentioned on a colleagues facebook page. I had missed the first session, the introduction, but messaged the team to check whether I was OK to go still and whether I was actually too old at 45. They said "Nope you're only as old as you feel, come along" so there I went.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about playing Roller Derby? go for it. As much as we all love Whip It, we're not that rough and we don't play on a banked track... Come try it.
Did you play any sports before Roller Derby? Sports!!!! Nah, I used to swim but...no... not done any sports for ages. I've never been a sports person, prefer to do my own thing, never liked competition and cant say I liked contact sports either... but I've actually loved becoming part of the Mansfield Roller Derby team and working with them... They are all awesome and I love them.
As well as being a member of the Misfits team, you do a lot of support work for the league... can you tell us a little more about that? I am actually off-skates at the minute through a knee injury (not related to my skating) but whilst I've not been skating I've still attended sessions, I've taken on the merchandising role and I've helped Morphine by taking on organising the Food Bank collections this quarter as part of our community work.
Any final words? We are all one big happy family and we help each other out, we do things outside of Derby together. So if you'd like to be part of an amazing group of folks.... come and join us.
