There’s a lot of reasons we give Member of the Month to individuals in our league, but we would like to now focus on someone who hasn’t had the best of luck with skating, but someone who has shown dedication to the sport against all odds. Violentnina Rossi was on skates just a few months after finishing Fresh Meat before she was forced to temporarily hang them up due to injury. Now, having overcome a knee operation, further injuries from sledding and jeep accidents, she is just making her way back onto the track to begin her training once again.
Here’s what she has to say about her time with Mansfield Roller Derby.
What is your derby name and number?
46. Violentnina Rossi. It's a take on my hero Valentino Rossi. It's also his number. I have it on all my cars and my water bottle. He is a bike legend widely considered the greatest motorcycling rider of all time, with nine Grand Prix World Championships to his name. Hopefully he'll add to that this season too!
I'm definitely a blocker! Not being widely experienced after passing my mins the being injured after just few scrims. I tried Jamming but hated it. I love holding the inside and shouting where the opposing jammer is!
When did you join Mansfield Roller Derby?
I joined in March 2014. I had been looking for a female ice hockey team but then a friend saw a leaflet for MRD fresh meat in HMV and told me. I'd got an old school friend playing for Dollies but wasn't really clear what roller Derby was! I was told it would suit me so gave it a go.
Derby heroes are my fellow Roller Derby Crips. A great Facebook group of injured skaters. Lots of moral support and encouragement. It is a sport with a lot of injuries so it's wonderful seeing people go through the ups and downs of recovery from injury. Oh and RIP McMurphy for the awesome bout makeup that I copied last Halloween!
Did you play any sports before Roller Derby?
Yes I horse rode. I had to cut back on the competitive side a few years ago when my mare was injured. Now we just potter around the woods occasionally (sideways, sweating and spooking!) She is a loon but I love her, my expensive field ornament.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about getting involved in Roller Derby?
No advice apart from do it. One life, live it.
Any final words?
Final words. Derby is the most supportive and inclusive sport I've ever done and no matter what happens with my flipping knees I'll be around for some time to come. Black n white stripes, Grey, or Purple n Green. They are all colours I love.
